CNN —Bayer Leverkusen took an almighty step towards winning its first Bundesliga title after producing a stunning comeback victory on Saturday, before title rival Bayern Munich lost during an eventful day in the German top-flight. Leverkusen scored two late goals to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 and maintain its unbeaten record in the league. Tuchel, who was hired as head coach of the German powerhouse in March 2023, will leave a year earlier than his original contract end date of June 2025. LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team for the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 6 — a day after the 2024 season opener, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday. Goodell made news when he said the Eagles will play in Sao Paolo against a to-be-named opponent. It’ll be the first time in 54 years the NFL has played a game on Friday night of its opening weekend. The game will be played at the Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians. The Eagles’ opponent, along with the kickoff time, will be announced closer to when the 2024 schedule is revealed this spring.

CNN —Marie-Louise Eta made history on Sunday after becoming the first woman to take charge of a men’s team in a Bundesliga fixture. The 32-year-old was named Union Berlin’s assistant coach earlier in the season but filled in for usual head coach Nenad Bjelica, who is currently serving a three-game ban. Eta’s first match in charge ended with a 1-0 victory against Darmstadt, with Benedict Hollerbach’s first-half strike the difference between the two sides. According to Bundesliga.com, Eta retired at just 26 before stepping into coaching – she took charge of Germany’s youth teams before joining Union Berlin in 2023. Bjelica will be missing for Union Berlin’s next two matches against RB Leipzig and Mainz.

CNN —Union Berlin’s head coach Nenad Bjelica was sent off for twice pushing Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sané in the face during a feisty Bundesliga encounter on Wednesday. As players and coaching staff rushed in to separate the pair, Bjelica again put his hand in Sané’s face. On the pitch, Bayern Munich was keen to hit back after losing to Werder Bremen last time out. Despite all its first-half dominance, Bayern began to creak as the game wore on and Union Berlin had a number of chances to equalize. The referee waved away the protests from Union Berlin’s players and Bayern managed to hold on for an important win.

The demonstrations came in the wake of a report that right-wing extremists recently met to discuss the deportation of millions of immigrants, including some with German citizenship. Some members of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, were present at the meeting. Additional protests planned for Sunday in other major German cities, including Berlin, Munich and Cologne, are also expected to draw tens of thousands of people. What started out as relatively small gatherings have grown into protests that, in many cases, are drawing far more participants than organizers expected. The protests also build on growing anxiety over the last year about the AfD’s rising support among the German electorate.
